Holy Cross Student Heads to World Technology Championship

This October, Grade 12 Holy Cross Catholic Academy student Victoria Scorziello will travel from Woodbridge, Ontario to Bengaluru, India, where she and her teammate will represent North America at the Technovation World Summit. Together, they will present their innovative healthcare solution to technology leaders and young entrepreneurs from around the world.

In January 2026, Victoria signed up for the Technovation Waterloo Regional Pitch Event, part of an international competition intended to encourage girls under 18 to engage with technology and AI. The students were given three months to identify a problem in their community and create a solution using technology. They also had to develop a business plan to support their idea.

As an athlete who regularly travels for games, Victoria understood how stressful it can be to experience an injury in an unfamiliar area and not know where to find appropriate care.

The students’ solution was to create CareCompass, a healthcare navigation app that brings together information about hospital wait times, travel times and the services available at different facilities. Its purpose is to help patients find the care best suited to their needs as quickly and efficiently as possible.

While the app was initially designed for travelling athletes, the students realized that anxiety about finding healthcare in an unfamiliar area affects many people. They also think that CareCompass could help reduce pressure on healthcare workers by directing patients to the facility that can best respond to their needs.

In May 2026, the students won the Senior Grand Prize at the Waterloo competition. By July, they were named North American Champions.

“It’s all super surreal,” Victoria shared. “I’m extremely honoured and excited for this incredible opportunity, and I can’t wait to see where my creativity and problem-solving skills continue to take me.”

Victoria hopes her experience will inspire other students to believe in their ideas, even if they do not consider themselves technology experts.

“You don’t have to be an expert in technology to get started,” she said. “If you recognize an issue in your community, do something about it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain from trying to make the world a better place.”

Holy Cross CA Principal Sandra Abate shared the school community’s excitement about Victoria’s achievement.��

“We are incredibly proud of Victoria’s outstanding achievement,” said Principal Abate. “Becoming a North American Champion and representing Holy Cross Catholic Academy on the global stage is a remarkable accomplishment. Her innovation, determination and commitment to making a positive impact truly embody the spirit of our school.”

Victoria’s accomplishment is a wonderful example of a ��ɫֱ�� student using her God-given gifts to serve others and respond to a need in her community.

Terry Fox’s Legacy Comes to Life at Our Lady of the Lake

There was plenty of excitement at Our Lady of the Lake CA in Keswick on Friday, September 18, 2026, as students and staff welcomed Terry Fox’s older brother, Fred Fox, to participate in their annual Terry Fox Walk, Run and Roll.

Students filled the gym, eager to meet Fred and hear stories about Terry. Fred shared personal memories of growing up with his brother, giving students a glimpse of Terry not only as a Canadian hero, but as a brother, son, friend and young man whose determination and compassion would inspire the world.

The students were captivated. Smiles, laughter, and more than a few tears filled the room as Fred spoke about the Marathon of Hope and Terry’s determination to help others while facing cancer himself.

Fred shared how only a handful of people were there when Terry dipped his leg into the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland at the beginning of his journey. But as Terry continued running a marathon a day, his story began to spread. By the time he reached Toronto, thousands were coming out to cheer him on.

Several cancer survivors and individuals currently facing cancer also joined the school as special guests, reminding students of the people and families at the heart of Terry’s mission. Following the presentation, students had the opportunity to meet Fred, take photos, ask questions and line up for his autograph.��

The school community then participated in their annual Walk, Run and Roll, joining Canadians from coast-to-coast in supporting the Terry Fox Foundation in memory of the Marathon of Hope.��

Terry’s story reflects values that are at the heart of Catholic education: caring for others, serving our communities and using our God-given gifts to make a difference.

Thank you, Fred, for sharing your family’s story with our students and for helping a new generation understand why Terry’s legacy means so much.

York Regional Police teach ��ɫֱ�� students the science behind impaired driving

Grade 11 and 12 students at Our Lady Queen of World Catholic Academy (OLQW) in Richmond Hill recently took part in a guest presentation about the science of alcohol impairment. The goal was to give them a practical application of their science lessons and to help keep them safe.

The presentation was given by Constable Sian Blythen of York Regional Police (YRP), who was a high school science teacher before joining the police force. She walked students through the chemistry and biology of how alcohol affects the human body. She also explained the physical signs of impairment and the tools police use to measure it.

Constable Blythen showed students how roadside Alcohol Screening Devices provide quick and accurate readings. She then explained how infrared sensors at the police station produce results that are reliable enough to be used in court.

This guest presentation was made possible by a partnership among the ��ɫֱ��, the YRP and the York Region District School Board, which invites police officers into schools to lead fact-based safety lessons.

These presentations see YRP officers visit local schools to provide information on many topics. Elementary students can learn about bicycle safety or road safety, while secondary students can participate in sessions on careers in policing or the science of speeding. Every presentation supports topics that students are already studying in class. The goal is to give young people the information they need to make safe choices.

After the presentation, students could ask Constable Blythen anything they wanted. At OLQW, they asked about impaired driving laws, careers in policing and some of the interesting things police officers encounter on the job. These talks can help build positive relationships between students and police.

The visit was organized by OLQW Science Department Head Sarah Henson and Principal John Heinrich. Both are always looking for new ways to teach students and keep them safe.

St. Angela Merici CES Wins First Place in City of Vaughan Earth Hour Banner Competition

Congratulations to the students and staff at St. Angela Merici CES! We are so proud to share that they have been awarded First Place in the City of Vaughan’s Earth Hour Banner Competition.

This year, the City of Vaughan invited students from the ��ɫֱ�� and York Region District School Board to share their vision for the future of our planet through creative banner designs. Out of seven entries, St. Angela Merici’s submission rose to the top, a wonderful reflection of the creativity, talent and environmental awareness that our students bring to everything they do.

In recognition of this accomplishment, the school received a certificate signed by Steven Del Duca, Mayor of Vaughan, along with a $250 prize. The winning banners were displayed at Vaughan City Hall during this year’s Earth Hour celebration.

Congratulations to grade 7 students Sofia Antoniazzi, Sophia Merenda, Ave Torbidone, Elise Manase, Ire Folorunso, Ariel Mckenzie, and to the teachers who supported them throughout this project, Mrs. Fini and Mrs. Salini!

We also want to thank the City of Vaughan for providing so many opportunities for our students to get involved in environmental initiatives. Partnerships like this one help young people connect their learning to the wider community and inspire them to become thoughtful stewards of our planet.

Stouffville Community Rallies Around Literacy at St. Brigid CES

Congratulations to Francesco De Bartolo, Principal of Our Lady of Hope CES in Richmond Hill, Ont., who is among the winners of the 2026 Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario’s (CPCO) “Elementary Principal of the Year” award.

Francesco is known for his dedication to the ��ɫֱ�� (��ɫֱ��), and especially to its students and staff. He is an excellent example of leadership in Catholic education and he is very deserving of this Ontario-wide recognition.��

Francesco De Bartolo has dedicated 24 years to York Catholic, with 10 years serving as an administrator (principal/vice principal). Student Recognitions at the February 2026 Board Meeting

The Board of Trustees and Senior Team always look forward to recognizing ��ɫֱ�� students and staff who have achieved incredible accomplishments. At the February 2026 Regular Board Meeting, the following students were recognized.

Alexa from St. Edward Catholic Elementary School in Markham, Ont., won first prize in the ShareLife School Poster Contest with the help of her teacher Mme. Dagher.

Angel from St. Agnes of Assisi Catholic Elementary School in Woodbridge, Ont., won second place in the ShareLife School Poster Contest.

This is an incredible accomplishment by both Alexa and Angel, as this contest was open to all students in the Archdiocese of Toronto.

Students from Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham, Ont., were awarded second prize in the secondary school category of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association’s (OCSTA) Short Video Contest. This contest was open to all Ontario students, which is a testament to the excellent work of students Zachary, Ismael and Kishan, who were guided by their religion teacher, Ms. Alexa Marro.

St. Justin Martyr CES Celebrates Black Excellence with Art, Community and Inspiration

St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School students and staff came together this Black Heritage Month to celebrate and honour Black excellence.

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 in this Unionville, Ont., school had the privilege of hearing from guest artist Duane Gibson, whose engaging and uplifting presentation delivered a powerful message: Stay Driven. His visit sparked meaningful conversations amongst students and staff.

St. Justin Martyr CES also transformed its main foyer with student art, which reinforced that it is a safe, welcoming and celebratory space for the entire school community. The art display puts a spotlight on Black history, culture and achievement.

Congratulations to the St. Justin Martyr community for celebrating Black Heritage Month with creativity and beauty.

Student Artist Shines at York University’s Black History Month Celebration

St. Brother André Catholic High School in Markham, Ont., was proud to celebrate its student, Angelika, whose original artwork was featured at the Jean Augustine Chair in Education Black History Month Event at York University.

The event honours the legacy of the Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman Member of Parliament and cabinet minister, and brings together students, educators and community leaders to celebrate Black excellence. Angelika’s stunning artwork was displayed at the event, a remarkable recognition of her talent and creative vision.

Angelika even had the opportunity to meet and be photographed with Dr. Augustine herself.��

This wonderful achievement was made possible, in part, thanks to the support of the ��ɫֱ��’s (��ɫֱ��) Black Excellence Graduation Coaches, especially Saran James-Vaughan. Their dedication helps ��ɫֱ�� students reach their full potential and access opportunities like this one.��

Local Radio Personality Visits ��ɫֱ�� Elementary School

St. Justin Martyr CES in Unionville, Ont., was thrilled to welcome David Corey, co-host of the Marilyn Denis Show on 104.5 CHUM FM, into their Grade 1 class on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

David was there to meet Ms. Noronha’s class, read them a book about virtues and answer their questions. With the next day being Let’s Talk Day, the conversation included some discussion about mental health topics, which David found impressive.

Students were so excited that St. Justin Martyr’s mascot, Wolfie, came out to greet this local celebrity.
